Find the current course grade

In Canvas, open your course and choose Grades. Your instructor may restrict totals or scoring details. Select the right grading period; weighted groups and multiple periods can change which numbers you are viewing.

Current grade is not the same as total grade

Canvas distinguishes calculations based only on graded assignments from a total that includes ungraded assignments. Check the “Calculate based only on graded assignments” setting before comparing numbers. A blank assignment is not proof of a real zero.

Reproduce only the supported calculation

For our weighted-category tool, enter each group’s current percentage and all syllabus weights totaling 100%. For a pure points system, use earned and possible points. Dropped scores, extra credit and late penalties require separate reconciliation; our tool does not import Canvas rules.

Move from course grade to GPA only after finalization

Use your institution’s percentage-to-letter thresholds and GPA credits. An overall Canvas percentage does not tell you a semester or cumulative GPA across multiple classes.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

Put the numbers together

With homework at 90% weighted 30%, exams at 80% weighted 50%, and an ungraded final weighted 20%, the normalized current grade is 83.75%; the completed work contributes 67 points toward the final course percentage.

Method and limits

These examples use stated mathematical assumptions, not a claim that every institution uses the same policy. Read our methodology or check the available institution-specific profiles. Your transcript is the official record.
