The scope changes, not the basic fraction
Both calculations divide quality points by GPA credits. The difference is which coursework enters those totals. Transfer, repeat, and academic-level rules may change what belongs in a cumulative record.
Why averaging two GPAs can be wrong
Semesters may have different credit loads. Combine the actual quality points and credits, then divide. Do not simply add the displayed GPAs and divide by the number of terms.
Keep credit systems consistent
Semester and quarter credits are different units. This tool does not convert them. Use one system and consult the institution’s rules before combining records.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
Put the numbers together
Illustrative example: 3.00 over 30 credits and 3.60 over 15 credits gives (90 + 54) ÷ (30 + 15) = 3.20, not the simple average of 3.30.
Method and limits
These examples use stated mathematical assumptions, not a claim that every institution uses the same policy. Read our methodology or check the available institution-specific profiles. Your transcript is the official record.
